Calling all cannabis connoisseurs and foodies! California might be on the verge of legalizing cannabis cafes, modeled after the famous Amsterdam establishments.
Assembly Bill (AB) 1775 recently passed the Assembly and is making its way to the Senate. If it gets the green light all the way up, local governments will have the say on allowing cannabis clubs to operate. These clubs could not only sell marijuana but also offer delicious food and refreshing non-alcoholic drinks – all under one roof!
This bill is seen as a win-win for small businesses. Assemblymember Matt Haney, who proposed the legislation, believes it will allow cafes to diversify their offerings and stay competitive. More importantly, it could help the legal cannabis market take a bite out of the illegal one.
Remember that previous attempts at legalizing cannabis cafes were nixed by Governor Newsom due to concerns about smoke-free workplaces. However, this new version keeps cannabis consumption areas separate from food prep and service areas, addressing those concerns. Assemblymember Haney is optimistic that Governor Newsom will approve this updated version.
California already has a few underground cannabis cafes operating, but they can’t offer both cannabis and food legally. This bill would change the game, allowing cafes to function more openly and provide a more complete experience for customers.
